HIV in the UK

Despite the incredible breakthroughs in treatment, education and testing for HIV, there are still huge numbers of people affected in the UK. Worrying statistics demonstrate that certain demographics of the UK’s population still struggle with HIV, with significant numbers contracting, or at risk of contracting, the infection every year.

Unfortunately, there is still a worrying attitude towards HIV commonplace amongst the at-risk demographics in the UK, who believe that the chance of contracting the virus is very unlikely. This is why we have collected information and statistics regarding HIV infection rates in the UK, to highlight just how common the infection can be.

Presented in an easy-to-read infographic, the stats and information can make worrying reading, especially for those belonging to the most at-risk demographics. Split by demographic, the infographic highlights the most at-risk groups, including men who have sex with men, who continue to be the group most affected by HIV infection.

Some of the most worrying stats in the infographic highlight just how many people in the UK are living with undiagnosed HIV. With widespread access to testing and treatment, this number should be nowhere near as high as it currently is, and many groups are working hard to ensure that all affected individuals can seek diagnosis

There are bits of good news, however, in the infographic. Improving diagnosis rates demonstrate that we are generally moving in the right direction towards controlling the rate of HIV infection and providing adequate levels of treatment. This is partially helped by the increase in testing methods, propelled by the self-testing method which has grown in recent years.
